It is not just a good idea anymore, mezzanine safety gates are now law in many States, simply because they work. There will never be a way to calculate how many accidents have been diverted by using them, but clearly, accident reports have gone down significantly since these products have been adopted into the working environment. With this improved performance, comes decreased insurance costs, and improved moral, all adding up to a better business model.
As of May 19, 2010, safety gates for mezzanine spaces have a new standard set up to reach out for. It is a dual-gate safety system, approved by the American National Standard (ANSI) published by the Storage Equipment Manufacturers Association, part of the Material Handling Industry. The new standards specify that a dual-gate system is necessary to protect the ledges of pallet drop areas on industrial work platforms.
There are some businesses that have men working in elevated areas all day long; handling material back and forth from great heights. All it takes is one off day and someone can be seriously hurt. These duel mezzanine gates can open from either side, through the guard rails, so the workers can do their job completely and safely at the same time. The new rules state that openings in mezzanines must protect the openings at all times. Gates that swing open, slide open, or lift out leaving an unprotected opening in the guarding are no longer acceptable, they need to open and self close, so that workers won’t be subject to a forgotten gate opening. These approved gates consist of the cantilever gates, pivoting, tri-side, open top and rack-supported model gates. These types of safety gates can be custom made, or stock, and install like any other. There are no special features about them other than they provide all the protection your employees will need, and still allow them to work in the mezzanines safely and efficiently.
